Their Eyes Were Watching God, Chapter Five.

Chapter five starts out with Joe and Janie on the train. He didn't really talk to her, but he bought her alot of stuff though, mostly little things. Like a jar of candy for example. He mostly talked about his plans for the new town.

Janie looked at him, and her personality and she liked him, and knew that the town was going to need someone like him to succeed. When they got off the train they found a buggy to carry them over to the town.

It was early afternoon when they got there, and Joe wanted to walk around. They locked arms and walked around the town. He was very jugdemental about all of the houses, and the town. They were both really dissapointed of the small little city.

Two men were sitting under a huge oak tree and were starting at him. Joe and them sat and talked for awhile. Janie's life with Joe starts out pretty good. As i said before, they are both dissapointed in the town, but they have a tons of ideas of things that they want to do. He finds them a place to live, and starts out planning everything.

All of the people of the town are really impressed of Joe and all of the stuff that he is doing. Joe picks a house for a month and they settle in. Joe then gets the people together and they pick the name Eatonville for their town. This is in honor of Captin Eaton, one of the land donors.

Joe decides because 50 acers is not enough land for a town so he buys 200 mores acers. When he is gone some of the try and talk to Janie, but she doesn't really talk back to him.

Joe starts working on all his prjects quickley. He builds a post office, and a crossroads store.

He also starts selling off land to the people that want to live in his town. When the new store is complete, he has a party. At the party, Joe has a speach, and he wouldn't ket Janie say anything. He ends of getting the position of elected mayor.

Joe later tells Janie that she must work in his store. Janie starts complaing because the streets are too dark, so Joe gets a street light put in. After that he has a big barbecue. And he is of course the first one to light the lamp.

Janie still has her long dark hair at this time, with ribbons in it. He makes Janie hide her hair under rags when she is working because he doesn't want anyone else touching it. This is when Janie realizes that she no long has any power against Joe.

No one in the town can tell how unhappy Janie is. The town keeps growing, and growing and Joe builds a huge house for him and Janie. This makes the women of the town love Janie even more. She starts getting hte feelings like she did when she was a schoolgirl, being different, not fitting in, being ignored.

The person that does keep her motivated is Pheoby Watson. One day the poarch sitters were out on Joe's porach and they see some of the things that Joe does to Janie, and they start to wonder.
