Janie is pretty much inlove with Tea Cake already, so he is always welcome. He starts helping her out alot at the store, he makes bread, plays the gutiar, and fries fish. One day he starts coming Janie's hair, and tells her to look in the mirror so she can see that she is a very pretty person.
Janie wasn't sure that she could trust Tea Cake, and he is afraid that he is going to lose her. The two sit and talk about their age different, and then he ends up leaving. Janie spends the next day thinking about him. Tea Cake is gone forthe next four days and this really makes Janie mad. He returns sometime later, and tells her that he has been working so that he has enough money to take her to the Sunday School picnic. Janie then thinks that he is only inviting her to be polite, but he assures her that he isn't.
