Their Eyes Were Watching God, Chapter Six.

The people take their seats on the poarch as usual, to sit and judge pretty much anyone or anything that passes by. They are all sitting on the poarch of Joe's store. The topic of the day is how Matt Bonner mistreats his yellow mule.

They accuse Matt of overworking and not feeding the animal. Janie listens to the people talk about this, and she its pretty amused. She has things that she wants to say too, but of course Joe won't let her.

One of the lazy afternoons, some of the people start a game of teasing the mule. The mule of course fights back, which is what they want. Janie is really bugged by this, and she tells them how she feels. Joe acctually buys the mule, and it becomes the town pet. The mule dies of old age, and  they have a mock funeral service for it. Janie is not allowed to go to the funeral.

Janie's life is pretty much just like the mules. Her whole life she is tormented by people, and her life gets better when she goes with Joe, but after awhile her freedom dies off.

Joe discovers one day that a bill of shipment has been misplaced, and a desired item is not in stock. He freaks out at Janie, and shes tires to fight back, but like usual Joe wins and Janie just gives up. And once again, Joe is satisfied.

A day later on something goes wrong in the kitchen, and Joe slaps Janie. At this point in time, Janie knows that their marriage is never going to be what she wants. All she can do is pretend that she is happy.

Joe then goes on to help Mrs, Tony. He is really nice and kind towards her, and Janie doesn't see why he can't treat her that way. The poarch sitters even see this, and they also see that Janie puts up with Joe's crap, and he just doesn't realize it.
